It was my late husband Tim Thornton's vision, combined with the rest of the family's commitment, which saw The Croft move from its roots in the Old Town area of Stratford upon Avon to Alveston Hill in 1986. It was our ambition to create a unique school, based on traditional prep school values, with the capability to deliver the very best education possible.

During the intervening years, my sons and I have striven to sustain the excellence which lies at the heart of our vision for the School. By placing the children at the centre of our ambition, we have been able to offer them some of the most exciting educational opportunities in the area. The children take great pride in 'their' School, indeed, they are our greatest ambassadors, and never more so than at our Open Mornings, when they escort prospective parents on tours of the School.

Investment in new facilities, together with a continual programme of refurbishment, and the landscaping of the School grounds, has placed the School at the top of its peer group. However, a building programme alone means little without the staff, who bring their expertise to the classroom and teaching of our young children. We are, indeed, extremely fortunate to have inspirational, loyal and dedicated staff.

I am supported in my rôle as Principal, by my two elder sons Sam and Barney. Sam is Director of Business Development, Head of Science and Co-ordinator for Geology and Latin. Barney is Director of Project Development and ICT. He recently introduced the very popular Eco Club and takes responsibility for all charity fund-raising throughout the school.

As well as my position of Principal, my equally enjoyable rôle is as a member of the Art Department, which means that I am involved with the children on a regular basis. I believe that the murals, statues and other works of art which I have commissioned for the School grounds, enhance everyone's experience here. I have also been a Croft mother, to my youngest son, Jake, and a Croft grandmother to my seven grandchildren, the youngest of whom, Andrew, started in the Nursery Class in September 2010.
